I write small angel checks from pre-seed through Series A. I don't lead rounds. I also advise a handful of early-stage companies. I invest my own money and decide alone, so I can go from a first email to a yes in one conversation.
What I back
I back founders building a product people can already use. I consider the problem before the team and pass on small convenience products with limited impact. I look for builders who obsess over their craft and their customers, ship in the open, and have already worked out how to talk about what they do. First-time founders are welcome when there's an experienced operator alongside them.
Cybersecurity and AI are where I add the most as an operator. I also back companies working on sustainability, healthcare access, banking, and non-alcoholic drinks.
Where I help
Fourteen years of running Trail of Bits taught me how technical companies earn trust and sell to skeptical buyers. I draw on my security background to help founders earn that trust by backing up their technical claims and addressing buyers' concerns about security and reliability. I also help them work out who will buy and how to reach them, and make introductions across security, Silicon Valley, and defense.
